Process Columns - Corinth Refinery

The Corinth Refinery is located in Agioi Theodoroi, about 70 km from the center of Athens and is considered one of the most modern refineries in Europe for the processing of crude oil and the production of refined fuels such as petrol and diesel for transport.

The refinery, with its auxiliary and fuel distribution facilities, constitutes the largest private industrial complex in Greece with a processing capacity of 200,000 barrels of crude oil per daily flow (BSD).

It also includes a cogeneration plant consisting of five gas turbines, whose total energy production currently reaches 85 MW and will increase to 102 MW after the installation of a sixth gas turbine. It uses natural gas as a fuel and as a raw material for the production of hydrogen.

The owner “Motor Oil Hellas” (MOH) is planning the expansion of the current refinery with the construction of a new “Splitter C3 Propane/Propylene” unit to separate the propane/propylene mixture coming from the current fluid catalytic cracking unit and to produce “Propylene Polymer Grade”, one of the most important building blocks for the entire chemical industry.

LMSteel Consulting provided the Executive Structural Design services (Basic and Detail) and the 3D BIM Modeling of the access and maintenance paths of the process columns called C-4401, C-4402, C-4403, C-4404 and V-4404

The Structural design was carried out through the development of a numerical finite element model using the SAP2000 v23.3.1 software considering the loads and combinations as per the technical specification.

The BIM geometric design was developed by creating the 3D BIM geometric models with Tekla Structures. The detailed design aimed at verifying interference (clash detection) with the process piping lines.
